Remembering Barbara

Dear Paddy,

Thanks for your reply and especially for reminding me just how much fun Barbara was! I laughed out loud when you mentioned 'Keogh Corner', and then it struck me that this was also rather sad as she was obviously the one person left from what we used to call 'The Back Row Club' - mainly consisting of Bar, myself, Sarah Vernon, Harriet Keevil, Jane Partridge and a few others. Through many years we listened and watched, acted and directed, commented and supported through some wonderful (and not so wonderful) plays. Thinking way back to Riverside days of Vivian Pickles we had some quite remarkable events. I even got to play alongside Tom Baptiste in a very powerful play about racism that was performed in front of the public. I am proud to have been one of the people with whom Bar shared her more incisive remarks with and just thinking about some of these is enough to make me smile. How often I recall her saying "Well darling, it's not a play is it?" as she puffed away on her umpteenth Gauloise. I used to dash up the stairs at the Polish Centre to get her glass of white wine ready before the rush. Happy days!

I moved away from Wimbledon where I had lived for many years in 2001 and it then became very difficult for me to get to Hammersmith easily. I miss the group and its work very much and would love to come and experience an evening again soon.

The website is terrific Paddy. Who could have imagined such a thing when we started - all crammed into the room on the roof at Riverside over 20 years ago! It's also great to know that you still acknowledge Barbara in the way you do. I can hear her now saying "Well I should bloody well think so darling!".

Thanks again for the mail and I hope to maybe see you all sometime soon.

Very best wishes

Gary James
